Community service is volunteered or donated work performed for the benefit of the general public or public service institutions. There are two main types of community service: It may be ordered by court or other authority as sentence or punishment, or individuals may willingly donate their time for the service of others.
Regardless of the reason why someone performs community service, also known as "useful public service," there are many non-profit institutions in every town where volunteers are needed.

No matter where you live, there are institutions in need of volunteers in every community. For instance, there's a food bank in nearly every town. Food banks need people to assist in different tasks such as receiving goods, sorting products, shelfing, preparing food boxes, receiving people, and helping to carry out the food.
There are also soup kitchens in many cities, and volunteers are needed to handle food preparation, clean, serve people, wash dishes, among other activities. Frequently, groups of volunteers are needed to clean, build, or rebuild parks, homes, churches, and other places where a distaster has ocurred. Another choice can be an organization whose mission is to assist a certain cause, group, or ethnic.
In this case, individuals can become involved in activities and events that relate to their own needs and interests. Such organizations can be focused on helping the environment, preserving culture, promoting tolerance, or assisting minorities. Community service opportunities are everywhere, but it's important to do research to discover where it's needed and what types of activities the person is best fitted for.
Benefits of Becoming a Volunteer
There are many benefits of performing community service. Many non-profit organizations operate only with the help of grants and donations, and therefore their budget is very limited. They don't have the ability to hire a large number of employees to carry out all the tasks involved, and they rely on the help of community members willing (or ordered), to donate their time.
By becoming involved, people are helping, not only the organization itself, but the community as a whole. In the case of food banks, for instance, they contribute not only to fight hunger, but also to lower the volume of waste caused by food markets; low quality or expired products that are still edible are wasted everyday because they don't meet the standards to be sold in stores.
Other benefits with different types of agencies include keeping the public informed. Information is the key to progress in most cases; people need to know about political issues affecting their community, practices to protect the environment, or important events associated with education, health, and emplyoment.
Awareness on the Issue of Community Service
Many people are not aware there are so many in need and so many organizations doing their best to help the community. Once becoming involved with any non-profit agency, one can see how much can be done. It is important to spread this awareness so that more and more people join the efforts. Soon people will discover that performing community service is not only helpful to the community, but also self rewarding.
